The Skills Gap Nobody’s Talking About: India’s Education-to-Employment Problem

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 29: Every year, about nine million students in India graduate from college. And every year, employers say that close to half of them just aren’t ready for the jobs on offer. This isn’t a new gripe — actually, people have been making the same complaint for more than a decade. But the numbers keep giving us this weird, conflicting story, and honestly, it’s time we took a closer look.

Two Reports, Two Realities

Take the India Skills Report in late 2025. It put India’s graduate employability at 56.35%. That’s a jump from just 46.2% four years ago. Reading just that, you’d think things are finally getting better: employers finding more job-ready talent, women starting to outpace men (54% compared to 51.5% for men, which is a first in five years), and states like Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka showing solid progress.

But then you get Mercer-Mettl’s India Graduate Skill Index, released around the same time. Their survey — and we’re talking data from around 2,700 campuses and over a million students — marked employability at just 42.6%. That number’s not just lower, it’s dropping, down from 44.3% two years before.

So, which one do you believe? Truth is, probably both and neither. The gap is the point: everyone’s measuring “employability” a little differently, with different tools and priorities. So, in the end, nobody — not policy makers, not universities, not even the students themselves — really has a clear handle on just how big the problem is. When two big reports can’t even agree on whether the job market is getting better or worse by a full fourteen percentage points, you know something’s off. The data is almost as scrambled as the system it’s supposed to describe.

Where the Gap Actually Lives

Break it down by field, and things get sharper. Computer science and IT engineering grads are doing fine — 80% and 78% employability, thanks to all the hiring around AI and automation. MBA holders, though, have slipped, from 78% to under 73%, since companies are looking for people who can work across functions, not just manage from a distance.

But the toughest part of the story is at the bottom. Graduates from Industrial Training Institutes have less than 46% employability. Polytechnic graduates? Worse — under 33%. These institutes were designed to handle vocational and technical education on a mass scale. In theory, they’re supposed to produce the people who can walk onto a factory floor or service center and start working right away. In reality, these are the very students struggling the most to get hired. Reports celebrate vocational skilling rising from 41% to 46% like it’s a win, but it just isn’t.

That’s the ugly truth: the institutions meant to solve the jobs crisis are stuck at the center of it.

A Story From the Factory Floor

Need an example? Think of a mid-sized auto-components factory somewhere near Pune. Industry folks love to use these places as evidence in their debates. The HR head there will tell you: hiring an ITI diploma holder used to mean they’d be useful on a CNC machine in four to six weeks. Now, training them to be even moderately productive takes three months. Why? The diploma still covers machines and methods the factory stopped using years ago. The company’s solution? They set up their own micro-training centers, basically teaching these recruits everything from scratch, because the certificate just doesn’t guarantee actual skills.

This isn’t some made-up case; it’s the same thing software companies dealt with around 2015, when firms like Infosys and TCS rolled out their own “finishing schools” because engineering degrees weren’t producing ready-to-code new hires. Now, it’s happening all over again, except this time it’s welders and technicians instead of software engineers. The curriculum always seems a step behind — and in India, that step is a long one.

The AI Layer Makes It Worse, Not Better

Here’s a bit that really doesn’t get enough attention: GenAI is already changing how “employable” is even defined. Over 90% of Indian employees use generative AI on the job in some way. The WEF says nearly 40% of basic job skills will change by 2030. So now we have a moving target, layered on top of a system that couldn’t hit a stationary one to begin with.

Non-tech roles are getting hit the hardest. HR employability has fallen below 40%. Digital marketing is around 41%. These aren’t oddball careers — they’re huge, mainstream sectors where tons of arts and commerce graduates end up. Even inside the broad “non-technical” category, some grads are landing on their feet and others are not. Case in point: commerce grads are suddenly in demand (63% employability, up from 55% the year before), thanks to all the new jobs in finance and fintech. But a big trend like that just gets lost in a single national number.

What Doesn’t Get Fixed by a Headline Number

Here’s the thing: when the headline reads, “Employability Improves to 56%,” it’s easy to forget the polytechnic and ITI numbers, or the fact that the divide between technical and non-technical education is getting wider. But that’s where the real problem is. The system as a whole could be improving while the very students it was built to support — first-gen learners, vocational students, kids from smaller towns — actually fall further behind.

This isn’t a talent gap. India’s not short on smart, capable young people — if anything, it’s young people leading the world in AI talent. What’s happening here is a design gap. The education system just isn’t keeping up with how fast the job world is changing. Unless that sense of urgency finally reaches vocational education (not just engineering or business schools), we’ll keep chasing these numbers: two reports, two different stories, lots of debate, and far too many graduates still waiting for the system to catch up.
