How to Invest in Indian Mutual Funds Through Your NRE Account

New Delhi [India], August 11: For many NRIs, staying connected to India is not just about family and memories. It is also about building wealth and participating in the country’s growth story. Indian mutual funds offer an accessible way to do so, allowing investors to choose from a wide range of investment options aligned with their financial goals and risk appetite.

If you already have an NRE Account, getting started may be easier than you think. However, before making your first investment, it is important to understand the process, documentation requirements, and regulations that apply to NRI investors.

Why the NRE Account Is the Preferred Route for Mutual Fund Investments

Before investing in Indian mutual funds, NRIs must decide which account to use to fund their investments. While both NRE and NRO Accounts can be used for mutual fund investments, the NRE Account is often preferred by investors who want greater flexibility in managing and repatriating their overseas earnings.

Some of the key advantages of investing through an NRE Account include:

  • Easy repatriation of funds: Investments made through an NRE Account are generally considered repatriable. Subject to applicable regulations, redemption proceeds can be credited back to the NRE Account and transferred abroad.
  • Tax-efficient account structure: Interest earned on an NRE Account is exempt from income tax in India under the prevailing provisions of the Income Tax Act, making it an efficient avenue for holding overseas earnings.
  • Better alignment with overseas income: Since an NRE Account is designed to hold income earned outside India, using it for mutual fund investments helps maintain a clear link between the source of funds and the investment.
  • Simplified financial management: Many NRIs use their NRE Account for overseas earnings and investments, while keeping their NRO Account for income generated in India, such as rent, pension receipts and other domestic earnings. This separation can make account management and record-keeping easier.

Choosing the right funding account is an important step in the investment journey. For NRIs looking to invest foreign earnings in India while retaining the flexibility to move funds overseas in the future, the NRE Account is often the preferred option.

NRI Mutual Fund KYC Requirements

Before investing, NRIs must complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) process. This is a mandatory requirement that helps financial institutions verify an investor’s identity and comply with regulatory guidelines.

To complete the KYC process, NRI investors generally need to fulfil the following requirements:

  • Register with a KYC Registration Agency (KRA): KYC must be completed through a SEBI-registered KRA. Your KYC should be approved before you can invest in NRI mutual funds.
  • Submit the required documents: Investors are typically required to provide a self-attested copy of their passport, proof of overseas address, and a recent photograph. Additional documents may be requested depending on the fund house or intermediary.
  • Complete identity verification: In some cases may require in-person verification or a video-based verification process as part of the KYC requirements.
  • Provide FATCA and CRS declarations: NRIs must submit declarations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The disclosures help meet international tax reporting requirements.
  • Check country-specific investment restrictions: Investors residing in certain countries, particularly the United States and Canada, should verify eligibility with the mutual fund company before investing, as some fund houses may have additional requirements or restrictions.

Completing the KYC process in advance can make the investment journey smoother and help avoid delays when submitting mutual fund applications.

How to Invest in Mutual Funds Through an NRE Account

Once KYC is complete and the NRE Account is active, the mutual fund investment process is straightforward.

  • Link the NRE Account to a mutual fund platform or directly to the fund house of your choice. The NRE Account becomes the source account for SIP debits and lump sum investments
  • Set up a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) linked to the NRE Account for regular investments in the selected scheme. SIP amounts are debited automatically on the registered date
  • For lump sum investments, initiate the transaction through the platform and confirm the payment from the linked account
  • Proceeds from redemptions are credited back to the NRE Account, maintaining the repatriable status of the investment returns
  • Many financial institutions in India, including ICICI Bank, offer mutual fund investment platforms that support NRE Account-linked transactions with digital management

Categories of Mutual Funds Available to NRIs

Through the NRE Account-linked investment structure, NRIs have access to a broad range of mutual fund categories.

  • Equity funds: Invest primarily in Indian listed companies, suitable for long-term wealth creation with higher risk and potential return
  • Debt funds: Invest in fixed income instruments, government securities, corporate bonds and money market instruments, offering relatively stable returns
  • Hybrid funds: A combination of equity and debt within a single scheme, provide a balance of growth potential and income stability
  • Index funds and ETFs: Passively track a specific market index, have lower management costs and provide broad market exposure
  • Liquid funds: Invest in short-term money market instruments, suitable for parking surplus NRE Account funds temporarily while earning a return

Taxation of Mutual Fund Returns for NRIs

Mutual fund gains for NRI investors are subject to Indian income tax under the Income Tax Act, 2025, with TDS applied at the time of redemption.

  • Equity mutual fund capital gains, short-term and long-term, are taxable at applicable rates, and TDS is deducted at source before proceeds are credited to the NRE Account
  • Debt mutual fund capital gains are taxed as per applicable income tax slab rates or long-term rates, depending on the holding period and fund category
  • Dividend income from mutual funds held in the NRE Account is also subject to applicable TDS under the Income Tax Act, 2025
  • NRIs can claim DTAA benefits where applicable. A Tax Residency Certificate from the relevant authority in the country of residence is required to claim the lower rate

Monitoring and Managing Your Mutual Fund Portfolio

Effective management of mutual fund investments through the NRE Account requires periodic review and digital access to both the account and portfolio.

  • Most mutual fund platforms provide a consolidated portfolio view linked to the NRE Account. NAVs, returns, and transaction history are visible in real time
  • Redemption, SIP modification and switch transactions can be initiated digitally from any country without requiring a physical visit or paper instructions
  • Annual capital gains statements from the fund house or platform are essential for ITR filing in India, where applicable
  • Periodic portfolio review, at least annually, ensures the asset allocation remains aligned with the NRI’s risk profile and financial goals

Final Thoughts

Investing in Indian mutual funds through an NRE Account provides NRIs with a repatriable, tax-efficient route to participate in India’s long-term economic growth. The combination of a well-structured NRE Account, completed KYC, and a linked mutual fund investment platform creates a clean and compliant investment framework. Above these, financial institutions such as ICICI Bank offer the complete account and investment platform infrastructure to help NRIs access Indian mutual funds with confidence.
